One of the most moving religious sites in Lombardy, to visit after pedalling through ancient settlements and splendid views of the western shore of Lake Maggiore.
The itinerary winds along the lake shore from Cerro di Laveno to Monvalle. It is well-marked with the code VVL-C1 on red and white panels. After skirting the Church of San Defendente, cross the provincial route no. 69 that connects Laveno Mombello to Angera and proceed toward Reno. Cross back over the provincial route to reach the hermitage of Santa Caterina del Sasso [St Catherine of the Rock]. From the hermitage, instead of taking the marked path, follow the provincial route for about 500 metres, turn left near the Cellina belltower and return to the track marked VVL-C1. When you reach Arolo, go down the steps that lead to Lake Maggiore. Take the downhill road toward Monvalle when you leave Arolo to reach the high part of the town. From here, passing through Leggiuno, return to the starting point by following the red and white VVL-C1 markings. On this final stretch they coincide with the markings of the Verbano path identified as VB.
