A panoramic itinerary along the Lake Maggiore shore characterized by the presence of the Cadorna Line fortifications, a complex grid of trenches and blockhouses, a wealth of paths for hiking and a military archaeology site.
Starting from Piancavallo, follow the paved road to Colle. Shortly thereafter, turn off to the right to ascend to Mount Morissolino and then descend along the crest that leads to Mount Morissolo. In the vicinity, you can admire the fortifications of the Cadorna Line built in 1916 to defend against the possibility of a German attack through Switzerland. From Mount Morissolo follow the track that leads to Colle and then take the road that goes up to Mount Spalavera. You can also admire other remains of trenches, just below the summit of Mount Spalavera. From the peak, an extraordinarily panoramic place, descend along the north ridge in a dense beech forest until you reach the track that leads back to Colle. From Colle, follow the itinerary back to Mount Morissolo. From here, in alternative to the outbound itinerary, you can take the level military road that leads back to Piancavallo with a marvellous view of Lake Maggiore.
