An ideal ring itinerary for a MTB excursion to discover the Cadorna Line, the system of military fortifications built along the Italy-Switzerland border during the First World War.

The itinerary with start and finish in Mergozzo starts at the playing field of the lakeside town along the “In Bici tra i fiori” bike path. After taking the military dirt road for Montorfano, pass the fork for Mergozzo and go on to the “Polveriera” zone, which offers a magnificent panorama of Lake Maggiore and the Gravellona plain. The route becomes more difficult as it proceeds along the military mule track to the summit of Montorfano. For the descent, you must return to the “Polveriera” zone and continue to the fork for Mergozzo (Path A58). The first part is a sheep-track with a very broken road surface. After skirting a quarry, there is a deviation to the right and a steep path will lead you through the forest, back to Mergozzo.
